Cropped versions[edit]

Why are you creating and re-uploading cropped versions of existing files? Unless you have some intended purpose in mind for these cropped images that can't be accomplished by the originals, please stop doing this. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 23:47, 19 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Again, please stop cropping and re-uploading versions of files for no reason. If you continue doing this, I will propose such files for deletion. -- Andre Carrotflower (talk) 18:16, 1 February 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Publicity photo of Arthur Gunter.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:38, 16 May 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Tous pour un avec le bataillon outre-mer des 199ième Irish Canadian Rangers.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

tifs and jpgs[edit]

Hello! I see you are uploading crops. However, please see COM:TIFF: TIF files are generally less desirable for display purposes: they sometimes render oddly on Wikipedia or other platforms, or take longer to be displayed. If a file has both JPG and TIF versions (as is the case in many Library of Congress images), neat crops intended to be displayed should be made from the JPG, e.g. File:Rappe LCCN2014713220.jpg rather than File:Rappe LCCN2014713220.tif. My general rule of thumb is JPG is the best file format for photographs, PNG is best for crisp line art, and TIF best used as the lossless "master copy" to download and adapt, with derivatives saved as more appropriate file types. When you oppose on COM:FPC[edit]

Welcome to FPC, User:Ooligan! Always glad to have another reviewer at FPC. Just one small thing: Whenever we oppose on FPC, we have to give a reason, even if it's "Per [someone else's username]". Otherwise, the opposing vote won't count.

All the best,

Overcat?[edit]

[1] seems redundant to me. Category:Black and white photographs of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition is a subcat of Category:Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, which in turn is a subcat of Category:1909 in Seattle. Is there some reason for this edit that I'm missing? - Jmabel ! talk 20:50, 1 September 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

US Gov Contractor reports...[edit]

Per your comment in a recent DR, I will point you at Category:IA_mirror_related_deletion_requests/deleted, in case you wanted to review any files that you think were deleted for the wrong reasons.

I am not going to be reviewing what I consider to be 'good-faith' nominations, based on my understanding of what {{PD-US-Gov}} covered however.

https://www.usa.gov/government-works states:- "Works prepared for the government by independent contractors may be protected by copyright. The copyrights may be owned by the independent contractor or by the U.S. government." .

That was the rationale behind a number of the DR nominations of 'contractor' reports, as it cannot be automatically assumed that they are covered by {{PD-US-Gov}}, and where it was clear that there had been a contribution by a Non-federal or Non Governmental entity, a potential copyright held by the non-federal entity has to be considered. ( I will note however that a number of the DR's of this nature proved to be documents without a (C) notice anyway.)

There are still a number of Fae's upload's that are incorrectly tagged as {{PD-US-Gov}}, and any contribution from others on Commons such as yourself to establish the correct license ( most likely no-notice or not-renewed works) is welcomed.

On the specifics of the Cranberry magazine - I would have no objection to your requesting a Deletion Review on Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:The_National_Cranberry_Magazine_(1968_onwards) given that you've identified some issues after 1968 may have defective notices. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:12, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You are wrong.[edit]

Re:- Commons:Deletion requests/File:Cranberries; - the national cranberry magazine (IA cranberriesnatio6668port).pdf

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Copyright_Act_of_1909 - Section 18 reads:-

"Sec. 18. That the notice of copyright required by section nine of this Act shall consist either of the word "Copyright" or the abbreviation "Copr." accompanied by the name of the copyright proprietor, and if the work be a printed literary, musical, or dramatic work, the notice shall include also the year in which the copyright was secured by publication. In the case, however, of copies of works specified in subsections (f) to (k), inclusive, of section five of this Act, the notice may consist of the letter C inclosed within a circle, thus: ©, accompanied by the initials, monogram, mark, or symbol of the copyright proprietor: Provided, That on some accessible portion of such copies or of the margin, back, permanent base, or pedestal, or of the substance on which such copies shall be mounted, his name shall appear."

this says the word "Copyright" OR the symbol, can be used Your defective notice argument doesn't apply.

I checked what it actually said, when you raised the issue of a defective notice. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:00, 16 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category discussion warning

Text:Colored has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the name File:Deputy Secretary Sherman Meets with Ambassador Hartley.jpg. A file by this name already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. For more information, please see Commons:Overwriting files.

Technical tip[edit]

If you're planning to extract more images from the old newspaper scans at Chronicling America, you might be interested in the methodology I worked out, which allows the extraction of larger, higher-resolution versions. DS (talk) 21:47, 31 December 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DragonflySixtyseven - Thank you for your suggested method for old newspaper scans. I have not tried it yet, but I appreciate you reaching out to help me create better quality files. -- Ooligan (talk) 23:29, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
File:Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial at nightfall.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Comments on Commonists, in the Common tongue[edit]

Translated from Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Commonists:

  • I think a bot could be developed to handle some cases. I believe that the vast majority of cases could be handled by simply tapping into the article history, as this user often overwrote existing links with their own. Therefore, simply revert his changes and you will have the original images, in most cases.
  • I agree that it's boring and manual for Wikipedia articles where the [photo] quality is lower. However, I'm currently having success at Wikidata where Orlando evaded blocks for a few years, but he mostly replaced high quality images, sometimes with even freer licenses, so all that needs to be done is identify his edit and undo it. Perhaps a bot could be leveraged to propose alternate images in the Talk Pages article, based on adjacency in a Commons category?
  • If Commons Delinker could be leveraged to fetch previous images from article history, we could fix the vast majority of these by returning to the status quo ante, and then proceed by evaluating higher quality images. I recovered over 150 good-faith Wikidata contributions this way.

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 07:01, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seconding this, please use Flickr2Commons so we can avoid duplicates.
Upload Wizard sets the filename as "File:Secretary Blinken meets with women leaders.jpg" and Flickr2Commons names uploads as "File:Secretary Blinken Meets with Women Leaders (52722970067).jpg" with the image id.
This leads to duplicates and then an admin, Túrelio in this case, has to go and set up a redirect.
It would be great if we can avoid the extra work. Thank you! // sikander { talk } 🦖 22:25, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Actor"[edit]

Any basis for this? I cannot find any reference to him as an actor; according to [6] he was a tenor, mainly as a concert performer though sometimes in operas. Anyway, I'm making a category for him: Category:Theo Karle. If there is some basis for "actor" I'd like to know. - Jmabel ! talk 05:17, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A great tenor. His work on early Television was apparently singing, not acting. Thanks for not including that category in his new category. -- Ooligan (talk) 05:39, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 1 May 2023, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2021 Picture of the Year contest.

Category discussion warning

Rummage sales has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!

I noticed you've uploaded File:P20230505AS-1379 - 52908282540.jpg and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error. Please give uploaded images meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the image is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the image itself. Thanks, and happy editing!

--Yann (talk) 21:24, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you @Yann. You are correct.
I renamed some files in the past, but I will rename most of my upload backlog by July or earlier. I appreciate your reminder and your good work on this project.
Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 21:42, 19 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Yann, I have notice a few bulk or mass file uploaders, especially files from Flickr.com, who have thousands of photos like the above file example.
Have you brought this issue to their attention?
If so, what was their response(s).
Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 19:40, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

flickr2commons[edit]

When uploading files from Flickr, please use flickr2commons. This avoids creating duplicates. Best regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 14:45, 21 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is not the first time that other users suggest you to use COM:F2C. Please respond to this, or you had any problems using the tool? --A1Cafel (talk) 02:35, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@A1Cafel, I mean, it’s not a policy to upload through flickr2commons (AFAIAC), but certainly that would make others’ work easier. By the way, I came here to kindly ask Ooligan to categorize properly the files he uploaded portraiting Lula da Silva, if possible, as the versions I had uploaded and categorized were simply redirected by @Túrelio.
Now everything is only located here, an inappropriate category, I’d say. Now there are some empty categories like Category:Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Narendra Modi or Category:Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Phạm Minh Chính.
Sincerely, RodRabelo7 (talk) 03:28, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I know, but at least a simple response should be given, either yes or no are fine. I concur with the poor categorization by the user. It takes efforts for others to fix it. --A1Cafel (talk) 03:35, 23 May 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). Hi Ooligan, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Opening DRs for duplicate[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Državni sekretar dr. Andrej Benedejčič prejel odlikovanje z redom princa Jaroslava Modrega - 2023-10-23 (8).jpg.

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

What is your basis for presuming this is Jack Ackroyd in this 1920 stage production of The Better 'Ole? Not specifically saying you are wrong, but the newspaper page does not name him. Yes, he was in the film six years later. Do you have anything more than that? - Jmabel ! talk 21:56, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jmabel, I thought you might say hello!
I found this little nugget tying the play and its actors to the later film by the same name. From an article by Wilbur W. Hendley in The Spokesman Review, dated 13 Apr 1919, Sunday on Page 37 via Newspapers.com
Here: https://www.newspapers.com/image/568379615/?terms=%22The%20Better%20%27Ole%22%20play&match=1
Quote = "The picture is made by the same cast that produced the play originally in England." Ooligan (talk) 22:29, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can't see that without paying, but does that give reason to think that was who toured it in the U.S. in 1920? - Jmabel ! talk 22:30, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oh, wait 1919. So was there a 1919 film as well as the one in 1926? - Jmabel ! talk 22:31, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel, Also,
Jack Ackroyd in the ad for the 1926 film looks very similar to the photo that appears in The Town Crier of April 1919. -- Ooligan (talk) 23:02, 6 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Talk page archive[edit]

Since your talk page included too many templates, it exceeded the limit of MediaWiki software, and the template cannot be displayed properly. You can archive them by pasting {{subst:User:MiszaBot/usertalksetup}} at the top of your talk page, and those messages older than a month will be automatically archived by a bot. Have a nice day. • I request that you fully restore all content that you removed from my talk page to its original condition and placement. --Ooligan (talk) 07:41, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@A1Cafel. Please remove all the "code" that you added to my talk page. --Ooligan (talk) 07:49, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Removed, but can you still consider archiving your talkpage content. @A1Cafel,
You responded to my request, "I didn't remove anything from your talkpage."
      • I previously wrote, "After a review of my talk page, I have discovered that you removed content from my talk page without my permission."
        • I also wrote, "I request that you fully restore all content that you removed from my talk page to its original condition and placement."
Without discussion or notification, you removed from my talk page:
      1. this
      2. this
      3. here
I agree with @Bbb23 here that "Worse, they deny it." --Ooligan (talk) 09:39, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      I mean this time, not long ago. --A1Cafel (talk) 09:51, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      And you wrote,
"I didn't remove anything from your talkpage."
So, that is not a truthful statement.
Also, I note that you have not restored your deletions from my talkpage as I had requested.
So, please, do not edit my talkpage in any way, except normal Commons communications. --Ooligan (talk) 10:31, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, the language specified for the description is incorrect and that needs fixing too. Thoughts? // sikander { talk } 🦖 02:15, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Sikander, you have not been on my talk page since you joined with A1Cafel in advocating for me to adopt the seriously flawed Flickr2Commons (F2C) tool. I still use "Upload Wizard," which is not perfect, but is much better at avoiding creating "duplicate" uploads, than the F2C.
Thanks for your observations. The file you mentioned was uploaded about 1/2 day ago. I will add more categories in the coming days.
Have you really looked at the contents in "Holding for Elisfkc" category? I checked all of the 66 files there. All these files were added to that "holding category" in 2019 or some even earlier- in 2017. They have been holding for years. I have even added categories to some of those files in the recent past as have other volunteers. Your example holding category shows it is not a substitute for just adding more categories, however thank you for your suggestion.
I will update the specified language description on those Latvian files. Thanks, --Ooligan ([[User talk:Ooligan#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 04:02, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, right! Infact I think it was Elisfkc who first pointed me to Flickr2Commons for easy uploads. The tool has issues, definitely, and fortunately good people are working on a new version: Commons:Flickypedia. The holding category idea is one I've found useful to easily find files that I want to work on later, and thought it might be useful to mention. Cheers. // sikander { talk } 🦖 05:11, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sikander, I see your holding category. I had added some categories to the many files being held in Category:2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference back in July. Let me know, if you need some help, since they were uploaded in December 2022.
"=== A tribute to Flickr2Commons === When we began to design the partnership, we had hoped to “adopt” Flickr2Commons and extend it. In June, we took a good look at the source code in consultation with Magnus Manske and figured out it probably wouldn’t stand up to being extended as it is without significant time invested to stabilise it. The preparation we did for this in June—trying and failing to run the source code locally, for example—indicates that it may be more robust to create a fresh version on the shoulders of Flickr2Commons." (emphasis added) Thanks again, --Ooligan ([[User talk:Ooligan#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 06:12, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
