Do You Have What You Need for a Home Business?

Before you take the home business plunge, make sure that you have what you need.

The idea of a home business is one that captures many people today. After all, technology makes it possible to do jobs never dreamed of before.

When I first started my freelancing business, few people were working from home as a full-time “job.” Now, though, telecommuting is on the rise, and a number of people have their own home businesses. Even if your business is just a side hustle right now, more and more people are seeing how technology can benefit them and help them make money. From online storefronts to monetized websites, there are numerous ways to engage in the business of making money from home.

But Do You Have the Right Setup for a Home Business?

While you might be gung-ho, full of home business ideas, you do need to take a step back and reconsider your position. Do you have what you need to run a business out of your home? Depending on what you are doing, it might require a little more or less to get started.

In my case, it's fairly simple. All I need is a high-speed Internet connection and a computer. Most freelancers have it pretty easy. Graphic designers might need software on top of that setup and two monitors, but, for the most part, it's fairly simple for a freelancer to get started with a home business. Those who actually make things, such as crafts, might need to buy supplies and equipment and make sure they have the proper shipping materials.

If you are really serious, though, you might need a work area. A dedicated workspace, even if it encompasses only your desk, can really help with productivity in your home business. Being able to separate work from your family is a good idea in some cases, especially as your home business grows. Before you get started, make sure you have what you need to succeed as a home business owner.

Are You Emotionally Prepared to Run a Business?

Running a business from home is hard work — especially at first. Not everyone enjoys running a business. A home business isn't right for everyone. For some people, a side hustle is sufficient. And I know people who love their day jobs enough that they just want a little side income and have no desire to quit. This is all just fun. You need to know, though, what works best for you. If you aren't emotionally prepared to work hard and power through disappointment, starting a freelancing business (or any other business) might not be the right choice for you.

You should also be emotionally prepared for the strains that it can put on your relationships. Also, you need to be prepared for the feelings of isolation that can accompany your home business. You will need to make sure that you are capable of working in that kind of environment. Also, prepare your family. Sometimes it's hard to put work aside at the end of the day.

Some people find that working from home doesn't suit them. My husband doesn't mind doing a few tasks at home, but he really prefers going in. (He's a college professor.) Even though he could do a lot of his grading and put together presentations at home, he does a lot of it at school since he likes to be home, separating work from his home life. It's not uncommon for me, however, to be answering emails or doing small business-related tasks in the evening while we watch TV.

Bottom Line

Consider your own preferences and your family's make-up. Before you jump into a business, lay the groundwork, and make sure that you are prepared for what's coming. A business doesn't start out as the blissful heaven where you do little work and rake in the cash. It's a lot of work, and you need to be prepared for it.

I have worked from home for nearly 10 years now. And I love it. Thankfully all I need is my laptop and good internet connection.

I struggled having a designated work area but then I’m alone here so don’t have to separate myself from anyone or anything.

One thing that does take some getting used to is the motivation to do work tasks that aren’t always top of your list – I often find house chores to do then that I would normally put off 🙂

And always make sure you have some sort of commute so it’s not straight from bed to desk. I walk my dogs first every morning which is a great start to the day and a sort of commute.

Thanks for the great tips, Sian! I also like to get up an exercise before I start my work day. It really helps to get things going.
